When Dexter Axle was founded by Leonard Dexter in 1960, the company was predominantly focused on equally serving the manufactured housing and recreational vehicle industries. As the manufactured housing industry evolved and manufacturers began predominantly using recycled axles as opposed to new axles, Dexter recognized the need to expand the product offering and the markets the company served. These markets included the industrial utility, cargo, horse and livestock, and Dexter also expanded its product offering to further accommodate the growing needs of the RV market.
Three family generations later with over 40% of the market share in the RV industry, Adam Dexter (Leonard's grandson) is now responsible for casting the company's vision for new products, growth and expansion from Dexter's Headquarters in Elkhart, Indiana. Dexter operates five plants, three of which are in northern Indiana. Of the five plants, four manufacture axles while Dexter also operates a growing presence with the Ventline and Dexter Door division in Bristol, Indiana.
Dexter's manufacturing facilities employ state-of-the-art robotics, precision welding equipment, and automated machining processes. Our comprehensive in-house laboratory performs rigorous stress, fatigue, and metallurgical testing while computer equipped test vehicles analyze actual product performance.
